When you have a cold, what remedies do you use? Or do you head to an Urgent Care center, your personal physician, or the emergency room?
Today, I am not feeling good. I have all the symptoms of a person infected with the influenza virus:
- Runny Nose
- Congested chest
- Dry Cough
- Sore Throat
- Body Aches
- Beginnings of a fever
I have armed myself with every remedy I can think of:
- Nasal Irrigation
- Daily Vitamin Intake
- Omega 3
- Plenty of water
- Plenty of Rest
- Gargle with salt water
- Breathe in from humidifier
We all have different remedies. For example, when I was a boy, my mother would:
- Spread Vicks all over my chest, making sure that she massaged in the greasy concoction into my skin (the heady menthol would burn my eyes so much that I could not help but fall asleep).
- If I had an earache, she would dip a cotton ball into olive oil that she had been warming on the stove, to stick into my ear (I guessed that was to undoubtedly draw out evil spirits).
Probably the worst thing that I remember my mother doing for me as a boy was when I had a very bad stomach problem. She gave me the smelliest, ickiest, blackest asian mixture that I had ever had. In fact, it was so rank that I threw up so many times, my problem went away.
So, here I sit…clearing my throat, ready to use my humidifier, after drinking my orange juice (earlier this evening), having taken my Zicam, irrigated my nasal passages, gargled with salt water, brushed my teeth, massaged Vicks VapoRub on my chest, and taken my Nyquil. In short, I am ready to collapse. Good Night.
